British 1796 Heavy Cavalry Dress Sword
This is an example of a British 1796 Heavy Cavalry dress sword. The double edged blade measures 32.25 inches and has a single fuller carrying the inscription J.J.Runkel Solingen. Runkel was a renowned importer of sword blades in competition with English manufacturers. He ceased trading at his London address in 1808 dating this sword prior to that date. The scabbard is leather with gilded brass fittings, the hilt and boat shell guard still retain significant amounts of gilding. A particularly attractive feature of this sword is the sword knot which is original to the sword. While faded on the faces open to the elements the red and gold colouring is still vibrant in the protected areas.
